XAT Syllabus 2015


There is no prescribed XAT syllabus for the exam. However the components and topics of the various sections of the syllabus is formed on the basis of trends and topics in previous year exam papers. The XAT paper pattern has undergone several changes in the past five years. Based on the same there are a number of topics lined up for components of maths, data interpretation and logical reasoning. Different from other management test in India the XAT paper also includes a separate essay writing and general awareness section.

Following is a common list of topics under each section of the XAT Syllabus

1. Verbal Ability and Logical Reasoning: As the name itself suggests this section includes questions from the English language as well as question in logic and reasoning. Hence its important that you prepare for the following topics

a) English Grammar
b) Articles, proposition
c) Analogy
d) Fill in the blanks with appropriate words
e) Para jumble
f) Close Test
g) English Comprehension

Logical Reasoning

• Fact interference
• Judgement
• Passage Conclusion
• Statement Argument

2. Decision making: Good managers are called to be efficient in decision making. The section intends to test candidates ability to solve case studies. Questions in analytical reasoning are also a common feature of this section. The key topics that are to be covered in this section include

• Decision making
• Tables and Case Studies
• Probability
• Linear Arrangements

3. Quantitative Ability and Data Interpretation: This is one section that requires sufficient practise. The key topics that need to be covered in this section include

• Charts and diagrams
• Tables and Caselets
• Averages
• Percentages
• Interest and Growth rates
• Time and Distance
• Number Systems
• Number Theory
• Algebra
• Surds and Indices
• Linear Equations
• Circles
• Quadrilaterals and Polygons
• Mensuration
• Sets
• Functions
• Probability
• Critical Path

4. General Awareness: 

This section was introduced in 2013. This is the second part of the XAT paper. This section is dedicated to general awareness. The best way to prepare for this section is reading through newspapers, periodicals and magazines and keep abreast with all the lastest news and world happenings. The section would include questions from

• News both national and international
• Sports News
• Business News
• Government and Politics
• Science
• Awards and winners

5. Essay writing: The novelty of this exam is the essay writing section. The topic provided for the paper is abstract in nature. The topic provided can also be a common pharse or idiom. The tendency for a direct or opinion seeking topic is highly unlikely. The time allotted for this section is 20 minutes. It is advisable that you practice this section well by writing meaningful and time bound essays.
