University of Madras (UNOM) PhD Research programmes are offered by the following university departments
55. CAS Botany
56. Zoology
57. Biochemistry
58. Biotechnology
61. Medical Biochemistry
62.Genetics
63. Microbiology
There are two kinds of registration for the PhD programmes offered by Madras University
a) Full time Scholar: (with or without stipend or fellowship)
b) Part time Scholar:(teacher, non-teacher, internal or external)
Candidates belonging to any of the above categories can register at University Departments, affiliated colleges, research institutes, Research and Developement Centers/Laboratories under the regulations of the university.
Eligibility: Masters degree with 55 percent marks in qualifying examination. For SC/ST candidates who have completed their PG degree before 1991 the minimum aggregate is 50 percent.
Admission for Phd Programme can be done four time a year in January,April, July, and October. Applications can be obtained from university on payment of prescribed application fee. Application form for admission is issued free of cost on production of two copies of community certificates issued by concerned authority and attested by a gazette officer.Candidates should submit their applications or on before the first working day of quarter January,April, July, and October.
Admission to PhD programme shall be completed in the first month of each session easily.However PhD registration can be done throughout the year.
Duration of Research:-
In case of full time candidates: A full time scholar enrolled for PhD programme should work continously for a minimum period of three years in department under superior after provisional registration and before submission of thesis.
In case of part time candidates: A part time scholar enrolled for PhD programme (both internal and external) should work for a minimum period of four years after provisional registration and before submission of thesis.
Exemption: Exemption of one year is permissible for candidates who posses M.Phil/M.Phil on inter-disciplinary basis or M.Litt in relevant subject or Master degree in faculties of Law.
