Thiruvallauvar University was founded in the year 2002 under the Thiruvalluvar University Act, 2002, Tamil Nadu Act 32 of 2002, by the government of Tamil Nadu. It began as the Postgraduate Extension Centre, University of Madras, functioning at the Fort Campus, Vellore, and was extended as a university.

Thiruvalluvar University is sprawled over huge acres of land. Each branch has its own building and laboratories and each department has their own libraries and computer facilities. The campus has an auditorium, on-campus hospital, a library, a canteen, playground, gymnasium, ATM facility, a post office, an STD/ISD phone booth, and a co-operative store.
