About:-
Periyar University was founded in the year 1997 by the Government of Tamil Nadu. It started with the three departments of Commerce, Geology and Mathematics of the postgraduate extension center of Madras University, functioning at Salem at that time. D. Jayakumar was the first vice-chancellor and Velusamy Nalliyan the first registrar.

Criteria for Admissions:-
•The original entry qualification of HSC/ Diploma Certificate or Degree or Provisional Certificate and a copy attested must be submitted during the time of admission.
• Eligibility rules as specified for each course shall be strictly followed and shall not be relaxed under any circumstance.
• Admission will be done strictly on the merit basis of the students.

Campus:-
University campus is rambled over an area of 99 acres of land. It provides facilities such as huge Wi-Fi enabled campus, centrally air-conditioning auditorium, library, modern cafeteria providing hygienic food, students clubs, dispensary, separate hostels for girls and boys and many other facilities for students.
Special Features:-
• The University got the 12(B) and 2f status from the University Grants Commission and has been accredited by NAAC with B+ grade in 2007.
• The Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) has been introduced for the various courses offered by the University from 2008-09 onwards.
